Working with writers was an interesting and eye opening experience. I was blessed to work with two great writers that didn’t require tons of editing. Both Ben and Nate were very receptive to any advice that I gave them and eager to learn. I am not much of teacher because I feel like I have much to learn myself. I was nervous because I wanted to guide them in the correction direction and help them pass.
My biggest fear was failing them. Their grades were in my hands in a sense so I wanted to do right by them. I have learned that it is very difficult to manage my time between capstone, work, and the writers. That is one thing I want to do better about the next time around. It would take me a day or so to get back to them when they asked for help. I felt like I was putting them behind because my lack of time. Now I know how it feels to be a teacher, to a degree, because they are stretched so thin all of the time.
Overall the experience was great. Both students wrote great stories and you can tell how much the cared about the topic. Both stories were over the amount of words required which did pose a problem in the beginning. I was worried about taking away from the essence of the story by taking out of the story. Luckily, I was able to keep the bulk of each story and not feel like I was compromising the essence at all. In the real world it would have been different. I would have had to figure out a way of cutting down the story but also keeping the essence of it. This is a learning process for both myself and the writers. I look forward to learning more as we go together and hopefully have a positive outcome at the end.
